1. John Bunyan (1628 – 1688)

He lacked formal education but became one of the greatest authors ever with The Pilgrim’s Progress which is the second bestselling book of all time, next only to the bible. Bunyan wrote from a prison cell, where he spent many years rather than give up preaching the gospel.

2. David Livingstone (1813 – 1866)

David Livingstone was one of the greatest explorers and missionaries that ever lived. He went where no white man or European had ever gone. Into the vast unmapped regions of inland Africa where he took the Gospel, served the native populations and combated the slave trade.

3. Mary Jones (1784 – 1866)

This teenage girl wanted a bible so much she walked a fifty-mile round trip to the only place where she could get one. Most of the way she went barefoot to save her shoes. Little did she realise her example would spark the formation of a great Bible movement.

4. William Wilberforce (1759 – 1833)

Gifted singer, prestigious politician and popular playboy, Wilberforce came to a Christian commitment. It not only changed his life but changed the world as well when he took up the battle to abolish slavery and combat immorality in England.

5. William Carey (1761 – 1834)

This humble uneducated shoemaker passionately believed the Gospel was for all people and went to India as a missionary. He sparked the modern Protestant missionary movement and overcame incredible difficulties to bring the message of Christ to un-reached people.

6. Robert Raikes (1735 – 1811)

A newspaperman saw children being exploited and forced to work long hours under intolerable conditions. He decided to do something about it and help educate these children for a better life. In the process he launched what became the Sunday School Movement.
